For our winter 2026 Surrey Theatregoers tour, we've planned a Santa's sackful of surprises! We'll be heading west, to visit breathtaking cathedrals, historic houses and ancient ruins, with plenty of time for more contemporary enjoyments, including Christmas markets, a Winter Light Trail, and the Longleat lions along the way!

Cadbury House Hotel, Congresbury

Impressive four star hotel set in six acres of landscaped gardens at the foot of a nature reserve. The original part of the building dates from 1790

Itinerary Day 1

Wells Cathedral and the Bishop's Palace

Our first visit is to the small but charming city of Wells, widely known as the smallest city in England. Despite its small size, it is home to the most colossal and magnificent Cathedral, steeped in fascinating history. Here we will have a guided 'Cathedral Highlights' tour.

There will also be time to visit Vicars Close, believed to be the only complete medieval street left in England; also to visit the impressive medieval Bishop's Palace and gardens. Plus browse the local gift shops and delis.

For ease and convenience, we have arranged a group lunch in the Bishop's Table café. After our visit, we'll move onward to our hotel where we’ll convene for drinks in the bar and our first dinner in the hotel restaurant.

Itinerary Day 2

Longleat

Today we visit the nearby Longleat. Yes, we start with the Drive-Through Safari, across the plains of Africa - sorry, the Wiltshire countryside - to spot lions, tigers, giraffes, rhinos, monkeys - in the wild and often up close - sometimes uncomfortably close! Who doesn't thrill to see big cats and cheeky monkeys?

We'll then have a guided tour of Longleat House. Completed in 1580, it is considered one of the finest examples of Elizabethan architecture in Britain. It is still the private residence of the Marquess of Bath but tour participants are able to view the opulent State Rooms and vast art collection.

Time for lunch, maybe a ride on the Longleat Railway or Boat Safari - and plenty of festive Christmas-themed stalls, and seasonal food and drink to enjoy. Then as the light fades, a stroll through the 'Legendary Worlds' Festival of Light displays.

Itinerary Day 3

Bath - Roman Baths and Christmas market

Designated a UNESCO World Heritage city, Bath is renowned for its ancient Roman baths and honey-colored Georgian architecture, as well as its association with author Jane Austen.

Our first visit will be to the Roman Baths. Built around Britain’s only natural hot thermal springs, these remarkably preserved ancient thermae and temple date back to 60 AD. You can walk through a superbly curated exhibition of archaeological finds and Roman artefacts, and view the steaming, open air baths themselves.

Throughout the festive season, Bath comes alive with Christmas Market stalls, so there will be plenty of time to do a little shopping and enjoy the seasonal food and drink on offer.

Itinerary Day 4

Salisbury Cathedral, Magna Carta exhibition, and 'Christmas on the Square'

Hotel check out, then we begin our homeward journey.

But one last stop - in Salisbury, a beautiful medieval city anchored by its 13th-century cathedral, featuring Britain’s tallest spire and oldest working mechanical clock, and home to the best preserved surviving original Magna Carta (1215). We'll have a guided tour of the cathedral to help us make best use of our time, and finish in the fascinating Magna Carta exhibition to browse at our leisure.

Own arrangements for lunch, then time to look around the streets of Salisbury, and maybe be tempted by stalls in 'Christmas on the Square'!

We'll depart at 4.00pm to be back in the home area around 6.00pm, depending on traffic.
